TRAFFIC CALMING

The Parish Council and many parishioners have expressed serious concerns about the speed of traffic through the village.

In the Village Design Statement is the following comment :

Lit pinchpoint in Wadhurst"Attention should urgently be given to ways of reducing vehicle speeds within the boundaries of the village.  Other local villages have successfully introduced traffic calming schemes, both within the villages themselves and at their periphery.  An investigation of these existing solutions should be undertaken."

The Highways Committee have investigated the available options with a senior engineer in the Highways Department.  We have been advised that traffic calming measures should be continuous, which means that once a vehicle has been slowed at a pinch point on the edge of the village, further intermediate measures are required to keep the vehicle within the speed limit.

A package of calming measures would cost approximately £60,000, and would include :

  • 2 pinch points
  • 2 Speed Indicator Devices (SID's)
  • 1 junction tabletop
  • Council would also like to purchase a piece of land to the left of the entrance to the Recreation Ground which would improve the site lines from the Recreation Ground car park and also for the motorists travelling up Watercroft Road into Station Road.

Unlit pinchpoint in OffhamThe Parish Council believes that the preferable style for pinch points would be the rustic style shown in the middle picture to the left.

The Speed Indicator Devices would be the same as that already in operation near  the dual carriageway in Otford.

Tabletops are similar to "sleeping policemen" but would cover an entire road junction. The current preferred site is at the junction of Southdene and the Meadows on Knockholt Road.

Tabletop at road junction in WadhurstAs part of the discussions with Barratt Kent concerning the Halstead Place site, the Parish Council has made the case that the development will generate a considerable amount of additional traffic, and therefore the need for traffic calming will be more urgent.  Barratt Kent had initially agreed to fund the traffic calming scheme.
